I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts about this?

I know a Valentine only costs about 3 cents but doesn't that old cliche "that thought that counts" still ring true?

Yes, and if you make it yourself it's even better!!
You don't need a proper purchased gift - just do something sweet like make your own card.
The best valentine I ever got was a tape recording my boyfriend made me of himself singing when I'm sixty-four by the the Beatles.
Every woman's different but in general we don't want presents- that's to easy really - we want you to do something that shows you care or that you are paying attention.
Cook her her favorite meal even if it's mac and cheese it shows that you notice what she likes and want to do something nice. Or if she's been talking about being to worn out to get the laundry done - do it for her.
Think about what her needs are based on the little things she says and do something based on that. It will show that you not only care and love her but you pay attention.
Good Luck and Happy Valentine's Day!
