Yes when your Anti-virus is set to boot with your system.Another factor is free software downloaded from the Internet sometimes come with some programs that are meant to take charge of your system during boot-up.Another thing that can make your computer run slowly is too much programs in your system - Having said that a good Anti-virus is not suppose to slow your system down e.g Mcafee

Yes it does slow your computer. Why? Because it constantly searches for viruses. Some times it even goes online for updates. I've been in the technician field for 1 year for internet service and I have to stop or remove anti-virus software off of customers' computer because it slows me down to install internet on computers. Please only use one software not 2. It could be safer to use 2 software but it will slow the hell out of your computer or just get the best anti-virus software so you wont have to get 2.

Well, in general, I'm keen on AVG since it's free. But it's a shame that it slows my computer for the 1st 30 sec after logging in, while it downloads things, and I have difficulty connecting to the net during this time. So I generally log in, and quickly tidy my desk while it's running.

only if they are not correctly installed!
as for good antivirus. the best suite i found is from http://www.trendmicro.com called pc-cillin.
a great all round total defense suite. that is often updated as frequently as hourly.
you need a relatively modern computer to run the suite (as it is not designed for older system running windows 98 and below).
the system may be running slowly as your system may be indexing your files, you may have a hard drive that is failing and so your processor etc is struggling to read it. you may have a corrupt instalation of sql server on your system, that could be slowing down your system.
so many reasons to why your system is running slowly that it is near impossible to tell for any certainty that the slow down is as a result of any one program. the only thing to do is install your software and hardware again after installing your malware defense suite (your anti virus program).
when setting up a system the typical process should be:
1, install the operating system
2, install the drivers and software for the motherboard.
3 install your malware defense suite
4 install the rest of your internal hardware
5, install all your software (games, office suite etc.)
6, if restoring a system from a failure then you may want to transfer back your personal documants and media files etc.
7, connect to the internet and update your malware defense suite definition files, and download any operating system updates as well as updates for your hardware devices.
8 start enjoying your system.

To an extent, any anti virus program that is set to scan all files when opened will slow down your PC.
However some slow your PC down more than others.
Norton is renowned for really slowing down PCs.

In a sense yes they will but note that ALL applications will slow down your system, there really is no way about it.
One however that I use and has fairly little interaction with your pc system is:
AVG 7.5 Free Home Edition:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1
Which happily works in the background and will barely effect the overall speed of your system.

most of the time antivirus makes your system slow. it also slow up the start up of the system. not only this when you want to install any software, anti v s.w checks and track its process.
some times it also slow your system by delaying opening files. after checking the file it opens.
