*Equations:
1. y = 1/2x + 3
2. y = 1/2x - 1

*Since both y-variables are isolated....

First: set both equations to equal each other.....

1/2x + 3 = 1/2x - 1

*Eliminate fractions - multiply the denominator with each term....

(2x)(1/2x)+(2x)(3)=(2x)(1/2x)-(2x)(1)

*Cross cancel "like" terms & combine the remaining terms....

1 + (2x)(3) = 1 - (2x)(1)
1 + 6x = 1 - 2x

Sec: combine the coefficients with the x-variable on one side (left) --- add "2x" with both sides (when you move a term to the opposite side, always use the opposite sign)....

1 + 6x +2x = 1 - 2x + 2x
1 + 6x +2x = 1
1 + 8x = 1

Third: subtract 1 from both sides....

1 - 1 + 8x = 1 - 1
8x = 1-1
8x = 0

*Isolate "x" on one side --- divide both terms by "8".....

8x/8 = 0/8
x = 0/8
x = 0

Fourth: replace "0" with the x-variable in the 1st equation (either equation will work).....

1. y = 1/2x + 3
y = 1/2(0) + 3
y = 1/0 + 3
y = undefined (a number can't be divide by "0")

There is no solution.

P.S. The lines/equations have the same slope (1/2), meaning they are parallel. Two lines that are parallel don't have a solution-they don't intersect at a point on the graph.

Two parallel lines do not have a solution.

A solution basically means a point of intersection.. If both lines were the same line, they would have an infinite number of intersections, Your lines do not intersect at all therefore, the answer is :

No solution exists.

Hope that helps!!

y = 1/2x + 3
y = 1/2x - 1

the lines are parallel, because they have a same slope and parallel lines never intersect, therefor, there is no solution.

Ya i am doing this in math to so if the lines do not intercept the there is no solution
