why cant it be a different color like red or blue or pink?

Not only does yellow mean "CAUTION", any combination of yellow on black, or vice-versa, is the most visible combination of colors in the human sight spectrum.

Actually, it could be a different color, except that yellow is the highest in reflectivity, close to white, and penetrates fog better than some other colors.
Yellow lines, when you're driving, will always be on your left. (Except in some goofy intersections where an island is bordered in yellow, for caution.)
If the yellow line is on your right, say a quick prayer.

I'm going with the caution answer. I just wanted to point out that in Europe, the center line is white. It's really weird when I come home (stateside) to visit no only because of the speed limit difference, but because there are different colors on the road.

Not only does yellow symbolize "caution," but yellow is also one of the easiest colors to see at night with the headlights of a car. Some other colors are horrible to see at night, because they cause glares and whatnot.

Go back to driving school. Yellow can be seen at night better than any other color.

A combination of easy visibility and warning, as the others said. Yellow is actually easier to see than white.

the yellow line in the middle of the road means something else.
if its a long straight yellow line without gaps,it means thats a two way and you cant overtake,and if its with gaps,it means you can overtake.

i'd probable run it over my aunt's face if I had a miniature one, and then use one over my ex boyfriends automobile for his "new layout" he continually needed-then bust his domicile windows out. i'd circulate around the line with him.

like are you kidding? it's yellow because it shows up best....same principal as to why people wear bright yellow or orange when they ride their horses in the fall.....caution....protection. do you not drive a car yet?
