I've been dancing for 10 years i did competition at my old studio and just switched to a new one that says that i have to be even more flexible than I am. I need to be able to get both my side splits....i had them last year..and overall just increase my flexibility. I know to stretch every day....but are there any stretches that really do help you to get your splits? I really want to get into competition but I'm not flexibly enough...I'm almost there but not there yet.

Yeah i know how you feel, similar situation when i moved.

lunges (toward the leg) helped me a lot.

Also this may not seem like it would help splits but it does,
do lower back stretches. and things like pike stretch (legs in front, and grab your feet)

The three most common mistakes in stretching for dance are
1. Bouncing
2. Over stretching (if it hurts TOO MUCH then stop, if it hurts a little its normal, but too much stop, because you actually slide backward)
3.keep your back straight, don't hunch the top of your back over to go further to the floor, it isn't helping, keep your back as flat as you can from the lower back.

one more stretch would be to stand in second, turn your body to your right, and pivot your feet so your feet are facing the right; one behind another, and try and touch your face to your knee. in your mind try to visualize your right leg stretching like a rubber band, up and down. then you can go into a lunge from there, it helps i promise, obviously repeat for the left.

hope it helps!! and good luck!

I think perhaps you should look into some form of Yoga, after all - have you seen those positions that Madonna can get herself into ??!
