1. Find "x" when y = -2 with y = 3x - 8
First: replace "-2" with the y-variable....

- 2 = 3x - 8 Or, 3x - 8 = -2

Sec: add 8 with both sides....

3x - 8 + 8 = -2 + 8
3x = 6

Third: isolate "x" on one side --- divide both terms by "3"...

3x/3 = 6/3
x = 2

2. Find "x" when y = -1 with y = 3x - 8

First: replace "-1" with the y-variable....

- 1 = 3x - 8 Or, 3x - 8 = -1

Sec: add "8" with both sides....

3x - 8 + 8 = -1 + 8
3x = 7

Third: isolate "x" on one side --- divide both terms by "3"...

3x/3 = 7/3
x = 7/3

3. Find "x" when y = 0 with y = 3x - 8

First: replace "-2" with the y-variable....

0 = 3x - 8 Or, 3x - 8 = 0

Sec: add "8" with both sides....

3x - 8 + 8 = 0 + 8
3x = 8

Third: isolate "x" on one side --- divide both terms by "3"...

3x/3 = 8/3
x = 3/8

4. Find "x" when y = 1 with y = 3x - 8

First: replace "-2" with the y-variable....

1 = 3x - 8 Or, 3x - 8 = 1

Sec: add "8" with both sides....

3x - 8 + 8 = 1 + 8
3x = 9

Third: Isolate "x" on one side --- divide both sides by "3"...

3x/3 = 9/3
x = 3

5. Find "x" when y = 2 with y = 3x -8

First: replace "-2" with the y-variable....

2 = 3x - 8 Or, 3x - 8 = 2

Sec: add "8" with both sides....

3x - 8 + 8 = 2 + 8
3x = 10

Third: isolate "x" on one side --- divide both terms by "3"...

3x/3 = 10/3
x = 10/3

What you do is plug in the numbers for y:

1)If y=-2:
-2=3x-8
3x=6
x=2
(2,-2)

2)If y=-1:
-1=3x-8
3x=7
x=7/3
(7/3,-1)

3)If y=0:
0=3x-8
3x=8
x=8/3
(8/3,0)

4)If y=1:
1=3x-8
3x=9
x=3
(3,1)

5)If y=2:
2=3x-8
3x=10
x=10/3
(10/3,2)

I hope this helps and good luck with your class!

y=3x-8 , y=-2
You equate them i.e
3x-8=-2
3x=-2+8
3x=6
x=6/3
x=2

And continue for the others
Good Luck
