each point on the Richter scale represents a logarithmic increment.. 5.1 is twice as bad as 5.0 and 6.0 is ten times as bad. the quake that killed over 17000 people in turkey, 1999 was only a 7.4. a 9.4 would be 100 times worse than that.

as far as i know, we haven't ever had one that bad.. have we?

Very. The earthquake which caused the tsunami, back in the ends of 2004, was rated as about 9.2. More at the sources.

It will level an entire city. I think there was one once in or near Alaska. They are extremely rare. Like once in a several centuries.
