Macs and PC's have gotten very similar over the years. I would go with a PC because Macs are expensive (you have to pay for all those funny commercials when you buy it!)
You might want to see what the college recommends some have requirements about these things.

You'll find the Mac Mini to be under powered for that purpose. It would work, but so would many others. What makes Macs stand out is the Operating System. Unix-based systems handle threading better than M$ Windows-based systems. Further, the Mac OS only has to support a very limited set of hardware so the OS is more stable just for that reason. Macs always were the de facto standard in audo and video editing. Further, with these new Intel-based Macs, you can install Windows as a dual-booter, just for those times when you might need a certain piece of software that won't run on a Mac. However, I've never found any such software. There always seems to be an equivalent for Macs, except for Internet Exploder.
Your best performance will come from the Mac Pro with the maximum amount of RAM installed, fastest hard drive, fastest and latest CPU offering, and video card with the most built-in memory (not utilizing "shared memory"). The colleges generally have great discounts for hardware and software for students. Apple's website also has an area for students.

The PC probably has more video editing programs available, but the Mac I find has the best software for video editing. I use iMovie all the time, which is easy to use but also pretty powerful for an entry level program, although probably not the best if you plan to do it professionally. I also have Final Cut Express installed but haven't quite figured out how to use it. I hear Final Cut Pro is good for professional videographers; it's what most of the pros use. Mac OS X is also much more stable than Windows and is far less prone to crashes, spyware, viruses, etc. I've had far less problems and headaches with the Mac than I did with Windows. As for which Mac is the best, for you I'd suggest the Mac Pro. It is the most customizable and upgradable, not to mention the fastest and most powerful. Some of the people on this board are saying that Macs are not easily upgradable but they are thinking mostly about the iMacs and Mac mini's. The Mac Pro would be your best option if you plan to upgrade or customize it, and it shouldn't cost much more than a similarly equipped PC.

The best way is to build your own computer. Although Macs are very good with graphics, good luck finding video editing programs for them that really work well. PCs are much easier to find software for. And there is an abundance of video editing software for them. Not so with Macs. You not only pay a premium price for the computer, (talk about Gates getting rich!!), then you get nicked on the software too! Apple is putting Intel processors in there computers, soon they'll have the same O.S. as everyone else (Apple will save big $$ on support for their O.S.). I still don't understand why Apple iPods had a problems a while back with viruses they got from being programmed on P.C.s? If their (Apple) computers don't get viruses, why didn't they program their iPods using Apple computers instead of P.C.s? I don't get it! It's like programming a Zune with an Apple Mac!

PC all the way. PCs can do anything Macs can do, also, you can upgrade PCs, unlink most Macs. The price is also a big factor, you get more bang-for-your-buck with a PC and you'll have the satisfaction of knowing that it won't be outdated in a few years because you can upgrade! For video editing...if you really wanna spend money and get something good, you could buy an AVID video editing workstation! http://www.avid.com/products/video/editing-finishing.asp
Else, you can do what I did, get a desktop that does what you need. I have an HP Media Center PC m7680n with a Core 2 Duo processor e6400, 2 Gigs of ram, and two 250 Gig hard drives. I bought it from Future Shop, I would send you the link, but unfortunately they took it off the website, I think it was a bit too expensive for most people to buy. With tax it cost me just over $2,200 CAN which is about $1,900 US. You could go for the lower 4400+ processor for cheaper and it should work fine! Just make sure whatever u get has a dual core (or more then 1 processor), 2 Gigs of RAM, and lots of hard drive space!

As a response to people's complaining about Windows...I'm not a fan of Microsoft products either, so I run a multi-boot with a few versions of Windows, as well as a few flavors of Linux. You don't HAVE to run Windows on a PC...you can use many different OSs, DOS, Windows, Linux, UNIX, Novell, and YES...even Mac!!!

Definitely a Mac! Reason being is that mac is made for the very purpose of being creative in music, video, websites and so forth. I have owned a pc before a mac and i will say that a pc is a good computer for video editing but you have a lot of flaws with pc that you won't find in a mac. For instance, your in the middle of capturing film or rendering a video and the pc freezes up on you, causing you to restart losing any unsaved video. Never had that problem with a mac. Mac has a lot of benefits that a pc don't. With a mac you will never have to worry about restarts, freezing, or buying virus protection programs. You have hot corners on a mac where you can put your mouse in the corner of the screen and spread out applications to choose instead of dragging and minimizing them. Many features of available on the mac to help you work as quick and innovative as possible with editing, especially when your pressed for time. Plus, universities that i have sought into for pursuing a profession in editing require a minimum of Macbook Pro 2.0GHZ Intel core duo, and 1GB of Ram. That is the MINIMUM!!! Oh and the cost of Mac being too expensive is just a myth. For what you can buy a pc for you can buy a mac, it just requires that you have excellent credit only if you are trying to get one to make payments on. But if you buy one straight out then you won't have that problem. People just don't use a mac bc they can't put certain programs on it, but they will all change when they release the new leopard os x for mac in the spring of this year. Hope this has been useful for you in making your decision. Thanks : )

the hardware combinations for PC are endless. Lots of motherboards and Video cards to choose and swap whenever you want. BUT! if you're not an experienced PC user or have a technician friend close...save yourself money long-term and invest on a mac.

Top Ten Reasons for Upgrading to a PC instead of a Mac:
01.) You enjoy reading computer manuals
02.) Buying parts 'not included' is your idea of being patriotic
03.) Blaming it on the PC is a great excuse... for anything
04.) Tech support is your idea of telephone dating
05.) Your favorite computer game is figuring out where your files are
06.) You look forward to today's new virus (or worm, or both)
07.) You like listening to telephone support hold-button music
08.) Letting the kids play on the Mac next door frees your time (eliminates after-school kid sitters)
09.) You think Bill Gates deserves the money
10.) You have nothing better to do with all the extra time
You should listen to those funny commercials! If you don’t want to worry about your computer shutting off while your in the middle of editing your videos, I’d go with the MAC.

i use a mac, and the application I use is final cut studio. I t works great. It is fast, and reliable. As for windows, in my opinion, they are out of date, and don't work is well in most aspects. However, if price is a concern, macs, and mac applications run on the higher end of the price spectrum.
