Gunpowder was not a reason, not in the way that a canon is more destructive than a balista. Gunpowder just marks the turn of how power is in the hand of anybody not just the 'best/most men'.

Before gunpowder castles were an economic way to be safe. You had all in one spot: Your 'king', your army, your tax-collectors and so on. Population was growing. Cities evolved around the castles and city-walls were put up......but the city kept growing and most 'community services' outgrew the castle so to speak. They all got their own buildings within the city. A castle as the seat of government was just becoming not practical anymore. By this time 'kings' were building palaces to live in.

Military 'objects' still were (and are) fortified and city walls were still being build despite the threat of cannons. Just think about what was built in world war 2. Many bunkers and castle-like buildings were still constructed.

Concluding: Castles were not build anymore because they were to small to serve their purpose. Decentralization of government stopped castles as seats of power.

Modern warfare is usually a little more careful to try not to harm innocent civilians, thus we don't usually need huge stone bunkers in which to protect everyone. Plus, population has grown exponentially since the Middle Ages, and I don't even want to imagine the discrimination and bigotry that would be displayed if thousands of people now were competing for precious space inside a castle as a battle approached.

Castles were great defences against the enemy. However, when gunpowder was invented the castles stopped being an effective form of defence.
