my freezer had a smell like a motor burning and then my food thawed out the frig is still cool not cold but the freezer is like a sauna.

If it is the condensor or evaporator motor you can replace them without dealing with the refrigerant. If it is the compressor motor you need to call a licensed refrigeration company. Like someone said earlier it could be a control that is not working properly.

It could also be a defrost problen, maybe the timer or defrost element. If that is the case it could freeze over the fan and stop it and being all ice you would only get 32 degrees temp in the freezer if you are lucky. but the refrigerator would still be cold enough. Call a service man.

It's possible but you would need to re-charge the refrigerant liquid which needs specialized equipment.

yes, but will probably cost more than a new freezer
take it out & dump it some where, cause they won't pick it up. unless you have the charge sucked out.... $ 50.00
