I had to have my blood taken the other day at my doctors for tests. But the nurse could not get any from me and she tried 3 different veins. The first one she got a tiny bit then it stoped not enough to send off she said. I asked her why this happened and she didnt say, only come again in 3 weeks and try again. Why do u think this happened?

It could be related to your blood and vascular volume...with higher blood pressure, your vascular volume is smaller, which constricts the size of the blood vessels. Genetically, it's possible that you just have small veins which make it more difficult to draw blood.

First off, this may have nothing to do with you. Nurses vary in their experience and competence. You might try asking a different nurse to draw your blood when you come back.

You also might have been dehydrated. Try drinking lots of water the day before and the day of the blood test.

Another thought is you might have difficult veins to draw blood from. If the nurse can't get your blood on the second visit, you might suggest that they send you to the lab or the hospital to get your blood drawn.

Hope this helps...

there could be several causes...

you could have been dehydrated which makes your veins shrink up, which makes them hard to find.

you could have tiny veins in general and they "roll" when the nurse goes to obtain the blood-this means the vein actually rolls away from the area where the nurse is inserting the needle.

having anemia could cause you to be difficult to draw blood from but chances are you would already know if you have this.

some people are better at drawing blood than others. i'm surprised that after the first 2 tries she didn't get another nurse or the dr even to try and get your blood. when you go back only allow her to try once and then request that they send you to the lab (either at a clinic or the local hospital's outpatient lab) to get it drawn. the techs there are used to having people who are "hard sticks".

Try drinking some water before you go. I was told one time that I was sort-of dehydrated so I had to drink some water and they tried in about an hour and had success. Just a simple thought. However, this may not be your problem but it won't hurt.

Hmmm? Maybe your body doesn't have any blood inside? Wow, you might be dead? Or, just a freak of nature?
