At my gym I see women wearing short shorts with longer spandex shorts underneath. What is the reason for why they wear the spandex shorts underneath?

actually i see men wearing spandex shorts under regular shorts too...

from what i understand, the reason is that it acts as a jock strap, as well as "hides their business," and the compression is supposed to reduce fatigue by reducing the "jiggling" of the thighs, it eliminates chafing between thighs, wicks sweat away keeping you dry, reduces the chance hamstring pulls and keeps your muscles in place.

i'm assuming it's similar for women although there's no need for a "jock" support. lol.

It depends. Are you exercising? If you are then it is fine and normal If you are wearing them under like, khacki shorts it's a little weird, but if it makes you comfortable and you wont be taking your shorts off in front of anyone, then by all means- wear the spandex.

I've never seen that in a gym, but we do that in softball all the time so when we slide we don't tear are skin off. I've also seen people in crew do that too.

the longer shorts act as underwear

The reason for this can be because we don't want our underwear to show.
