US Govt. feel that they now have do whatever it takes to protect Israel even if it means that US national security isn't directly threatened? Should America today be paying for mistakes it made over 50 years ago & using US troops for the quick fix?

i doubt it, USA came into the war a little later than perhaps they should have done, but look at what happened after the war, the splitting up of Germany, Nazi scientists employed by the USA, deals with Russia, american bases around europe, IBM's involvement in creating the computer programmes to exterminate the jews. The structure of the world changed after world war 2, and America gained from that. It was all a strategic plan.

Europeans, many who saw Hitler in a good light before he started

No, the US government and especially the present adiministration does not feel guilty, and they learned everything they know by supporting Hitler. Do your research...
