Crusoe, as the first line tells us, was born in 1632. 1659 he was stranded (first line in Journal). He returned to England in 1687 (near the end of the book...he was 54-55 years old here). In 1694 he was convinced to return to sea (next to last paragraph). The adventures at sea lasted another ten years (last paragraph). So that would put it at 1704. So he was either 71 or 72. We can assume that this was when Crusoe would be narrating his story, as he provided very detailed accounts of his life. Odds are he was still at sea when he finished this narration. His only period of rest from the sea was briefly after returning to England, and the last line suggests he is just at that moment planning to retire from his adventures.

The book was fiction, not reality. Crusoe was a character.
