When I looked into this a few years ago, I discovered that it is a lot less expensive to drive up to Prince Rupert, British Columbia (about a 2 day drive from Seattle) and then take an Alaska State Ferry to Anchorage.

You can also go from Bellingham (just north of Seattle):

Head North to Bellingham (Fairhaven), and board the Alaska Marine Highway!

You can either obtain a stateroom, or camp on the deck which is always fun. They are very accommodating. It is a great adventure.

Check their web site listed below and be sure to browse their FAQ section under "Sailing With US".

I have traveled the ferry system here many times and loved it!

When we moved up to ALaska (military) we went from Bellingham, WA up to Juneau and then from juneau to Seward, AK. We took our suburban that was pulling a u-haul. They charge by how long your car is. You can also get a 2 or 4 person berth to sleep in while you're on board. Check out Alaska Ferry. :)
