I believe it is Bolivia that is starting to use Cocaine for medicinal purposes.

Is it such a bad idea to use Cocaine for the same medicinal purposes as opiates?

Yes I understand that cocaine is addictive and so forth but so is morphine and other opiates commonly used in hospitals.

I think it is a good idea. In the UK cancer patients are given heroin as a pain killer and it allows them to function normally. The risk of addiction while being monitored closely by the hospital is slim. The benefits out weight the risks, and even if one becomes addicted it's not so bad. My bf was a heroin addict for six years and he managed to kick the stuff.

It is a double edged sword, forgetting the legalities. It probably works great against pain. It is very addicting, both physically and mentally. But the bigger problem is that the damage that it causes to your heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys. Plus the fact that the severe increase in metabolism as well as the increased secretions from your brain will severely shorten your life span. Opiates, as easier to control, and require a mild drug called Narcan/Naloxone, to instantly reverse their effects. Cocaine requires benzodiazapines such as Valium to reverse their effects, so not only does the drug itself damage your body, but the solution to an overdose will continue to damage you in other ways. Plus the damage from opiates on the body is far less then that of Cocaine. Heroine, Morphine, Percocet, Diluadid, Methadone, are all easily reversible, and truthfully, for any terminal patient, I don't think that the addictive properties should even be an issue. But for the person that is in pain, but not terminal, Cocaine will be more devastating then the underlying cause of the pain.

Cocaine is used as a contact anesthetic, like benzocaine, lidocaine, and the other 'caines. Use in this manner is done in such a way that it doesn't cause the euphoria and other effects associated with snorting or smoking cocaine illegally.

I had it injected in my knee during major surgery and it numbed the immediate post-surgical pain so that I could get up and around without screaming. It's not uncommon.

For everyone who says, "NO because it is addictive", look at some of the legal medications out there that are addictive: Benzodiazepines, Codeine, Oxycontin, Darvon, Lomotil, Vicodin, Dexedrine, Barbiturates, Ritalin, Morphine
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, "...48 million people-about 20 percent of the U.S. population-aged 12 or older had used prescription drugs for non-medical reasons in their lifetimes." That was back in 2004.
The only difference between illegal drugs from a street dealer and those pushed by a pharmaceutical company is, the street dealer knows me by name and the drug company knows me by a number.

This is new to you?

Cocaine has been used for years in pain killers, once even used straight as a pain killer. As you said though it is very addictive narcotic.

Go to the marijuana there are some strains grown just for pain relieve, and is legal in some states.....none of those nasty side effects.

noting that cocaine ends in -aine, its primary medical use is as a topical anesthetic for oral surgery. However i do know a case where it was used on a child for a minor procedure, it went down the childs throat paralysing it, causing the child to go into respiratory arrest and die, right in the hospital under the nose of the doc. there are other meds that are preferable
