Hey there.
I absolutely agree. Hwy 1 running up the California coast is breathtaking. I've done this route several times and it's always worth it.
If you don't have time to do the whole thing, start out in LA or SF and just drive between the two. You can easily spend two days taking a leisurely drive and stopping to take in the beauty of the scenery.
