The configuration you specified is a good one but the current gaming trend needs more than that. Current games uses realisting lighting, textures and models. To run such games you need more than what you mentioned. THe following is a good gaming rig for up to date games.

Processor - Intel dual core
RAM - 2 to 4 GB of DDR2
Video Card - 512 MB Pixel shader3 supported directX9 card. A dual graphic card architecture(SLI) is better.
Hard disk - SATA2 based drive

The above said is also good for running Vista.

Note : If you want to upgrade to a good gaming rig, wait till DirectX10 supported cards are available in the market. Becoz the next generation gaming requires such a graphics card.

because it depends on what the chip is. if its celeron and so on. then its not that powerful compared to dual core and so on. so work computers can work fast on officce programs due to the fact it dont need the processing power that a game needs.

really any computer thats dual core and has like 2 gig of ddr2 ram thats for gamming. liek corsair ot OCZ and a video card thats pci express 16 and a sata harddrive (I liek WD raptor HD) will run any game

note to person that posted the note. there is already a video card made for DX10. its the nvidia 8800 and is DX10 only. been out for awhile now.

games nowadays are moving to reality man, these games needs a better processor and a graphics engine.
Pentium 4 processors are thing of the past with thier one core processor

take in ur consideration that:
processors now are moving to multiple cores (e.g dual and quad cores) which are extensively better than the ordinary one core processor unit
intel released three types of dual core processors:
1-intel pentium D
2-intel core duo
3-intel core 2 duo

intel core 2 duo is the best of them in terms of performance ,cooling and power usage , with nearly double price of pentium D (the worse)

about the vid card
its doesnt depend only on the memory range but the graphics engine and its features also the chipset is important
i recommend the geforce chipsets over the ati ones

it probably depends on the type or model of the video card..like some video cards especially the high end ones are really good for gaming and there are normal ones that provide basic video card functions.
