No, the filler arcs were specifically designed to let the manga get far enough ahead so that the anime never catches up to it again. Any story beyond when Jiraiya accepts Naruto as his apprentice is filler and can be considered canon. I've read all the manga chapters so far and there is not a single mention of anything that happens in the fillers.

You don't have to, if you think it's a waste of time.

Do watch up to episode 135. That's the end of Naruto I. Yes, there's that Morino Idate episode that's a misleading plot that makes it seem like a filler.

However, me being a total fanatic, I've watched up to episode 220 and read up to chapter 341. It's just some minor stuff that doesn't matter, but it's still fun to watch. There are also many new characters that never appear again. However, I suggest watching episode 210-220 about 'Return The Favor' Mission.

It's not neccessary to watch any of the episodes. I honestly think the filler arcs are interesting and some of them go with the plot. I mean, the Genin go on missions and things -- to different villages. It gives information about the surrounding villages and such, and about the ninja themselves. It gives the other ninja the spot light, instead of Naruto sometimes. I mean, some of the filler arcs are going to make Naruto look more like an idiot/clown, but you never knoww. But it's up to you if you wanna watch them..

I'm honestly not even at the filler arcs -- I'm only at like fight with Gaara/Shukaku and Sasuke. But I know I'm going to watchh them. :o)

fillers really start at 136 or so, and the reason they are called fillers is that they are superfluous fluff, none of the fillers material shows up in the manga, and thus, is not part of the actual story. so in short, no you don't have to watch filler to understand Shippuden. but you do need to see to episode 135

you dont need to watch the fillers, but i suggest that you do because there are some good character interaction filler episodes. you could be risking missing some pretty cool stuff.
