ok
R= read only, so once recorded on, thats it, all you can do is watch the dvd
RW= once you have watched the programme, you can re-recorded over it , hence rewrittable
- format is ideal for recording any film in widescreen, but all - formatt disc need to be finialist before watching
+ format is used for normal tv.
So if you recorded a widescreen film on + format you would have a small picture.
Hope this clears it up for you

The - r and -rw is the "official" DVD recordable medium as sanctioned by the actual DVD people
Sony and Philips wanted DVD recordable with extra features so they dicided to make their own +r and +rw
You need to ensure you have the right discs for the drive you want to use it in. It wont work otherwise.

In layman's terms the plus (+) and minus (-) as different formats and cannot be mixed. This means that if your DVD recorder is in plus format, you must use only plus discs in it. Obviously minus recorders and minus discs work in the same way. The exception to this rule is if you purchase a multi-format recorder. These will record both plus and minus discs equally well. These recorders are more expensive but more versatile as any disc will work. Finally, "R" discs can only be written to once, so you'd probably want to use them for stuff you want to keep, such as your favourite movie. These discs cannot be erased or re-recorded. "RW" discs, on the other hand, can be recorded, erased and re-recorded as often as you like. I hope this helps to clear things up for you.

This is referring to the types of home-made DVD formats it can play
the + and - (plus and minus) are a bit of a mystery to me, but R meand writable, a single use disc. RW means re-writable, so that you can use the disc more than once.

The r on the disk means re-writable. You can use it to burn stuff. To burn a CD or movie onto a disk you have to have a burnable disk. There are several different kinds.
