This is my second pregnancy and my last. I go in at 6am. I'm a little nervous becuase I had alot of problems for my daughter. That was 6 years ago. I was told not to eat anything after midnight. Also they are putting me on ampicillin to treat for Strep B.

1. Would it be okay to eat a biscuit and orange juice or sprite prior to going in? I hate to be hungry through labor, but is that too heavy?

2. Can an enima the night before bring on labor that night?

3. Does demerol work better than nubaine for being induced? I had nubaine for my daughter's birth and I didn't find it that strong once they put me on Pitocin. It worked great for my own labor pains though. BTW, I will get the epidural, but until I get to 4 cms I need some pain relief. LOL

4. Do you know if they will treat me with the ampicillin a few hours before they start the pitocin? I read that the antibiotic needs to be in my system before labor starts.

Thanks for any help.

The only parts of the question I can answer are 1) no, you shouldn't eat anything. They don't want you barfing on them. Sprite is okay, and I was told "clear juices" like apple, and maybe popsicles. No solid food. 2) Demerol works great. I had that all three times, and never had any trouble. The rest, I have no idea. Good luck!

If you are being treated for step B they will start that before the pitocin. It just needs to be in your system before your baby is in the birth canal.

Taking an enema "could" help induce labor but it's not likely.

If you were told not to eat don't eat or drink anything. It's so that you don't vomit during labor, or incase of a C-section.

I only had demerol, it made me feel light headed and I didn't like it much. I was also induced but I didn't need the pain relief right away my contractions weren't that bad early. I did get an epidural after my water broke though.

They will start the IV antibiotics as soon as you go in and then start your labor. I would eat something maybe a few hours before you go in. The reason they tell you not to eat is in case of a emergency c-section. But I had a section 14 hours after I went in and I still threw up on the doc. So no matter if you eat or not some people still vomit. An enema probably would not cause your labor to start, but it would clean you out before you go in. That is a personal choice there. As for Demerol you may be sleepy with that and if it is administered early enough I think it would be okay for you and baby. I hope this helps and congratulations.

They tell you not to eat because of the risk of you throwing up and just in case you have to have an immediate C-section, I think this is ridiculous though, your body needs fuel to go through labor....a biscuit is just fine, but I would drink something besides OJ, something a little less acidic on your stomach. Demerol works wonders! I have had nubaine and demerol and I agree....nubaine doesn't work very well! They will probably start your antibiotics a few hours before or at the same time. Good Luck to you :)

I am being induced Tuesday night at 8pm, and was told that I could eat a light meal arounf 5. WIth that being said, I don't see why you couldn't eat something light before you go in Wednesday morning. An enema could possibly bring on labor, but if your cervix isn't ready, then at least you have cleaned yourself out before labor actually begins! My experience with demerol was that it makes you super sleepy and you are very tired and then BAM! awoken by a contaction. (Oh, wait I just read you are getting an epidural). In that case, demerol would be perfect because you would be able to sleep and rest before it is time to push. As far as the ampilicillin, I am StrepB neg, and don't really have that much experience with this. Perhaps they will first give you Cervadil, or some other prostagland to help stimulate your cervix to begin dialation before they give you anything IV. If that is the case, they will probably give you the antibiotic then, because the Cervadil takes a few hours to begin to work.

1. Nothing by mouth after midnight for a reason. Some of the medications can make you vomit..not a good idea to have food in there. SEcondly, if for some reason you have to go into surgery, things could be greatly compromised if you've eaten anything.
2. Probably not. Though it could help with some cramping!
3. Pain medications affect everyone differently. I can only use Nubaine for labor-it's the only thing that helps! If it didn't help you last time, opt for something different this time around.
4. Ampicillian will be started IV most likely shortly after you get there. It normally takes an hour or so to infuse.

They should start the antibiotic within 30 to 45 min of your arrival, I am not sure how to spell it correctly but staydahl...will definately help with the contractions prior to epidural. It doesn't make you sleepy, it just make you feel kinda drunk...lol....I have been induced 3 times prior and laxatives or enima's didn't work to bring on labor for me...but for other's they did...it might be worth a try...just don't over due it. As far as eating, they tell you that in case of emergency c section....don't want you vomiting on the table...however...think of the women that go into labor on their own and have to have emergency c's....who's to say they didn't just eat a steak dinner. If your going to eat...do it lightly...yougurts, jellos'...toast..etc. Nothing too heavy...anyways good luck and congratulations!

I was induced with my first pregnancy and its not bad at all. Eating before is fine, they just say that just in case you happen to get sick during labor. Eating something light more than likely isn't gonna kill you. I wouldn't drink the OJ tho, its very acidic and may upset your stomach. I had Demerol and pain wise it worked great, but it made me very dizzy but I'm just one of hundreds that use it. I had pictocin too and it worked great, it sped everything up. Yes they will start you first on the antibiotic first, they told me they would on me for something a little different.
