College is not only a "foundation of knowledge" it is also for many the transition from young adult to full adult hood. In these stages many people experiment. I would also guess that some drink because they find school stressful and others becuase they see that many others are doing it and want to fit in.

well, how else do you get the liquid from the fountain?? It's much more worthwhile to take in what the university offers rather than to take it around in bottles and try and look for the right one when the time comes...
