i would have to say my favorite author would be stephenie meyer. She has a great series, starting with Twilight, which was an amazing book! Her books are about vampires, which I am not usually interested in, but somehow Stephenie Meyer makes them beyond interesting. She blends just the right mix of reality, fantasy and love. And yea, i have heard of Laurell Hamilton. her books are good, i agree

Alexander Dumas spins a good yarn, as does Jane Austin. For more modern authors, James Herbert (horror) is usually very readable as is Colin Forbes (thriller). Terry Prachett (humour) and Janny Wurts (fantasy) are ones I would also recommend.

Can I give three: Harry Turtledove; Robert Holdstock; Michael Moorcock. All are Science Fiction writers, but all are much, much more.
