Having one can't exactly be harmful, its more getting one and waiting for it to heal that can be harmful.
If you go somewhere that doesn't properly sterilize their equipment, and if you don't clean it religiously after you get it, it can get infected which I'm sure could lead to serious problems (or just make you have to take it out).
When I got mine pierced I didn't really want to look at what they use. They take some clamp thing and clamp your skin so its really easy to stick the needle through. The thing they use is basically just a bigger needle. Honestly, it isn't very painful, but it is a pain to clean several times a day/whenever you work out/if you go swimming!(swimming can be pretty bad for it). You also forget that you just got it pierced and it hurts to lay on your stomach (when exercising) or hold something on your stomach.
But after it heals it doesn't hurt at all, just like your ears..
So, just make sure that the place where you go is certified and ask around and see if other people have had problems with it.

I dont know the names of the tools, and the hole is a little bigger...but i dont think its a danger to health.. I got mine done about 2 years ago (and im not all into piercings and tatoos and crap) but its really cute.
As long as you go to a place thats clean and as long as the open the packaging in front of you so you know that the tools are sterile (the package w the needle and the other 2 thingys in it..haha)
It went so fast for me and the pain wasnt even bad..in fact my dad made me drive home! (i was still 17 so i needed parental persmission) I just didnt sleep on my belly the next 2-4 days (and if you do make sure your belly button ring isnt one that snags onto stuff and if it is, make sure your sheets are smooth)
You basically just have to follow the directions the piercing parlor ppl give you (usually they tell you then give you a paper w/directions) keep it clean and wiggle it around (same as ear piercing..its fine)
So yeah. good luck (if youre going to do it)

If it is done properly having your belly BUTTON pierced shouldn't cause any health issues.
The piercer typically uses a sterilized clamp to get a good grip on your skin. Then he uses a needle, that is often hollow. Pushes the needle though, sometimes into a cork...and then slips the jewelry through the hollow end of the needle and he's pulling the needle through. Sounds complicated, but really it is all done very quickly.

People!! whoever is saying it causes a health risk - you've got to be kidding me!!! They stretch your skin by pulling it with a forcep like tool. and as for the girl that said it can spread to your internal organs if it gets infected!! ( you can't be for real right? ) Pleazzzze!! gimmie a break! it's a piercing not surgery! if it get's infected, you would just do as you would if it was your ear. No worries! and Yes! it does look cute - not on everybody though!! I so believe you must have the belly for it ( not you ) in general. Hope this helps *Wink

Belly bottom? Do you mean an inverted navel?
Anyways, they grab the skin with forceps and they use a hollow needle, that's how they can pierce with a bigger gauge and insert bigger gauge jewelry. If you go to an experienced piercer at a clean, reputable salon you shouldn't have any problems, but if your belly button piercings gets infected, it can spread and get to your internal organs.

The skin is a bit more thicker down there, so a slightly wider needle is required.
Is it painful? From what I've heard, YES!
As for health issues, if the needle is not sterilized, you might be in trouble.
Otherwise, it should go off without a hitch.
wang?
P.S. I hope you're referring to the belly "button," and not your bottom, otherwise my answer is of no use to you or anyone else!

It's a belly BUTTON piercing, not belly bottom piercing.
I suppose if it gets infected enough it could cause some problems, but you just have to keep it clean.
They use a very large needle.
