Unlike most all other types of extinguishers, CO2 units do NOT typically have a Gauge. The only true way to verify if the unit is still charged is to check the weight. This can usually be done at most fire extinguisher shops for free or for a minimal charge.

CO2 fire extinguishers come due for a hydrostatic test every 5 years so be prepared to have that done regularly. The unit will be emptied and pressure tested, dried, and recharged with new CO2. This typically costs about $35 depending on the size of the unit, but it's worth it as CO2 makes a great extinguishing agent for fuel and electronic fires and the CO2 leaves no mess or residue after its use.

Also, keep if the unit is equipped with a discharge hose, it needs to be checked for continuity to make sure it's still safe for use.

It's best if you plan to have the unit checked by a professional once a year.

Yes they need to be maintained. You need to refill when the pressure drops into the red area. If you dont have a guage you should have a pressure popup or instructions on the extinguisher.

there should be a gauge on the unit. regular maintenance includes inverting the unit and tapping te base lightly wth a rubber mallet. this can be done every 6 months to a year and helps keep the insides from compacting. if the guage drops into the red zone you can take it to your nearest fire station and they will help you, many times for free. this saves you the cost of buying a new one and helps you get acquainted with your local fire department should you ever need them.
