Not at all. the reason its not run is that pro linebackers and even lineman are way too good and too fast. They would just break it up almost every play. and the risk of turnover is too great.

Wasn't that what Spurrier was trying with the Redskins? It doesn't work as a whole thing. It works as a gadget play/trick play style. The problem in the NFL is all the players are that fast. The players that aren't were weeded out by the fact that only about a third can make it from Division 1 to the NFL, assuming no Division 1a or below make it. Then cut it down further since they aren't replacing every player every year.

Echoing what the rest of the answers have already said, the option will not work in the NFL because for one thing, the linebackers and even the defensive linemen, are just too fast for the option to work well. I believe it was a good 12 years or so in a preseason game that Bill Walsh tried a couple of option plays as a test and didn't succeed with them.

It kind of is... not a traditional option, but the Colts run a read option offense, where Peyton fakes a handoff every play from the shotgun and decides whether to run or keep it and run the designated pass play. The normal option (ie Air Force) would struggle because the defense is too fast.

No, the players are entirely too fast in the NFL for the option to work. The option is even being weeded out of the college game because teams are focusing their defenses on speed. The option is a dying breed.

Options will never work in the NFL, compared to college, the DB's Corners and Linemen are all way too fast, there is no possible way an option based offense could survive in the NFL

No. The option wouldn't work, or teams would end up playing a game resembling rugby with defenses cheating safeties up tight and putting 7 or 8 men in the box to contain the option, literally DARING the offense to throw.

No. The option works best against teams who have undisciplined players, and a defense that is not prepared for the option, meaning that they don't have responsibilities like the OLB will cover the option back and the MLB will take the QB. NFL defenses are far too disciplined and skillful to fall for options, and forcing a RB to keep pace with a slower QB could take away from his effectiveness, unless your QB is just as fast as your RB

As a gadget play it could work but NFL Ds adapt to quickly. Also you put your QB at a huge risk of injury with the option...not to many teams would take that risk. Overall the minimal gain with the option is not worth the risk.

no, option is all based on being faster and more disciplined that your opponent.... all pro teams have speed... also a QB couldn't take the abuse.... I have always thought it could be effective inside the five yard line with a running back lined up at QB....
