You do NOT wait until after you've been accepted to college to apply for financial aid.

You must fill out the FAFSA form, which is available both online, and in your guidance counselor's office. It is usually due the February BEFORE you would enroll in college.

When the FAFSA people get your form, they will decide, in general, how much financial aid your family will be expected to contribute toward your college education.

Also, they will send each college your FAFSA report, and then each college will use it to figure out what they're going to offer you in grants and scholarships.

When the colleges offer you admission, their offer will be accompanied (or followed shortly) by a financial aid package offer. You are supposed to compare the offers you get from each school in order to make your final college decision.

I hope this helped.

Actually, you can apply for scholarships at the same time that you're applying for college. The college specific scholarships as well as general ones are awarded around March. It depends on when you apply to school and when you receive your acceptance letter.

Most scholarships don't pay for on-campus housing. They are usually meant for tuition and maybe books. You are expected to pay for the rest, unless the school gives you a scholarship to cover room and board.

Most scholarships, loans, and grants are sent to the school who sends you any leftover not used for tuition, books, room and board. They vary in amount and qualifiers. However unless you concentrate on writing a good essay (spelling does count) you won't get a scholarship, let alone one that would cover dorm fees.
