i dont know anything about sizes except my boyfriend should wear a 38x40 or somthing like that

Most men's pants are sized this way. The first number is waist measurement, and the second number is inseam measurement.
Most stores have the jeans labeled this way so it shouldn't be too difficult for you to find this size (though a 40 inch inseam leads me to believe this guy is tall and it might not be as common as a pair of 38 x 34s).
If he is a 40 x 40, you may have to go to a Big and Tall store to purchase jeans, just for the length.

You may have to go to a store for tall men. 40" seems like a pretty long inseam.
