The New River flows north because that is the downhill slope. It meets with a river farther north and eventually flows into the Mississippi.

A compass will tell you direction, it will not tell you slope. North is not uphill and south is not downhill just because t looks that way on a map. Gravity acts towards the centre of the planet not horizontally along the surface.
Rivers flow in all directions in both hemispheres. They flow from higher ground to lower ground and usually to the sea. The Amazon flows east into the Atlantic. The Congo flows west into the other side of the Atlantic. The Nile flows north into the Mediterranean, the Rhone, on the other side, flows south into the same sea.

The "NILE" runs North, water cannot go up hill, only to lower elevations in geology. A River may run North but, Never Up Hill to a higher elevation.

The elevations of the source of this river and the surrounding terrain to the east and west of it are of higher elevations ------And, simply put-- it may "appear" that the river is flowing uphill--but such "appearances" can be extremely deceiving to the eye and judgement---believe me here---no river EVER flows uphill--- this is simply an illustion !!

not all rivers flow south....some flow north. no river can flow up hill as that is against the basic foundation of motion. just because its flowing north over south does not mean its uphill.
