I ran across an article that talked about Charlotte, NC being the best city for blacks. It was a study done by BET. They rank lots of them. Here's the link:
http://www.bet.com/Site+Management/Packages/BESTCITIESFORBLACKS.htm?wbc_purpose=Basic&WBCMODE=PresentationUnpublished
From their site:
"We began the project by choosing 22 major cities, based on overall population and the number of Black residents. Then we learned as much as we could, statistically, about Black life in those cities. There were more than 25 categories, including income, home ownership, unemployment, poverty rates, single-parent homes, education levels, illiteracy, crime rates, per-pupil spending, in-state college tuition costs, teen pregnancy rates, AIDS rates, infant mortality, low birthweight, home values, cost of living and Black-owned businesses. We attached a value to each category, weighting some more heavily than others. We also interviewed residents and other experts in those cities."
Hope this helps!

dont look for a city where its more firendly to just black people. instead look for city's with large diversity's usually these are the kind of places that are more tolerant towards differences between their residents due to continuous exposure between race religion, and other cultural differences. All places will have their pockets of intolerant people but usually there are plenty of choices there. I live in Houston, and its pretty laid back for a large city. You're not always worrying about being politically correct here because the racial tension isn't felt here like in other southern states.

I'm not black or white but i grew up in a black neighborhood and went to an all white school in Houston. I guess you would say I got the benefit of both worlds. Houston is a great place for people. Period. Nowhere is like here, and you can find your niche or stray from it with equal ease. I've never felt out of place. Houston's people are unique because in the inner city they accept everyone for who they are. Black, white, gay, straight, whatever. There's something for everybody and everybody is welcome. Artists are finding a renewed mecca here. Anyone with the courage to stand out is recognized. You must let go of the black/white thing to truly belong, and I think you will.

I agree with the above answer as saying that Atlanta is more "black-friendly" place to live. But there is no "perfect" place. Of course there will always be those who think we are still back in the 50's but who9 cares about them, and life goes on. I don't know your opinion on racial issues, but I know at times, it can be in peoples head that, with the famous quote, "Everyone is against me, or they are saying, doing staring...ect because I am black". I
I currently live in Texas, and yes its know for its "redneck" activities, its a state like all other 49. Of course you dont wont to move where its nothing white's who still think we are not in an intergrated time, but the important thing to realize is whats going to be your living enviroment for the next few years.
Whereever you choose, be sure to find out about the local things happening amongs the African - American crowd. Like mentioned, I'm live in Texas; Houston to be exact and i love it. I'm in area with predominantly white's but very active in the community to the few blacks here. But of course, I have to travel a bit at times for other functions. But all in all, its all what you make of your experince and enviroment. Good luck to ya

houston and atlanta have good reputations. washington d.c. is very black-friendly too (aka, chocolate city) though parts of the city can be really rough. i hear mixed stories about oakland/east bay in california, but some of what i hear is very positive.
as far as states -- my best guess is maryland. pretty liberal, tolerant state overall with huge, established black communities.

Houston is a very diverse city, so everyone is welcome here. Over 120 languages are spoken here. Like other big cities, there is the ghetto district that keep the police busy, and there are very nice black neighborhoods and very nice integrated neighborhods. I don't think Houston can beat Atlanta, but it comes close.

Firstly, i praise you for asking such a question. I, from personal experience would have to say the city of Atlanta, as the black population in this city is quite high, there are also rich "black" neighborhood's...with low crime rates situated in the East-side of Atlanta.... as for the most uncomfortable city- i would have to say Austin, Texas. As a black colored man, i felt quite uneasy in "Redneck" County. Hope This Helps Brother.

HOUSTON BABY! So diverse, kids grow up knowing all sorts of races and ethnic backgrounds... I grew up in Iowa and then moved to Wisconsin then to Wyoming, none had the diversity and experience and it was so humbling to move here and learn so much about so many DIFFERENT GREAT PEOPLE!
