The oldest of mankind's professions is 'prostitution'. The next oldest profession is 'lawyer'. Both professions 'solicit' for business.

while prostitution dates back to at least biblical times, the oldest profession without a doubt would be farming, about 7500 years ago.

Well, the earliest task was probably forager. However, since "profession" comes from "professio" Middle Latin for "to take religious orders," it would make sense that shaman was the earliest true profession. The various shamanistic rock and cave paintings pre-date any written historical record.

I would like to say Prostitution, but wouldnt the men paying for it have to have a profession of their own to pay for it 1st? How would the prostitutes know their was a want/need for the services and to get paid for it if THEY were the 1st professionals???

Hunting and gathering are not considered occupations as there is no economy involved. Historians and archeologists state the oldest profession is......NOT prostitution.....but farming.

Isn't that a euphemism for prostitution? Sure I heard it described as that once.

If this is a serious question, though, I'd go with housewife. Makes sense no?
