Tower (case)
Motherboard
RAM (random access memory)
Hard drive(s)
CD-ROM
Floppy
CPU (central processing unit)
GPU (graphics processing unit, also known as a graphics card)
Sound card (if not included in the motherboard already)
Fans (if necessary)
CPU cooler (if necessary)
Power Supply
and that's it
the CPU cooler is only if you want one either more silent, or more powerful.
the Sound card, some motherboards have them included and built in, some doesn't
the graphics card, some motherboards have integrated ones, but those just suck

All of them?
A box with a psu (power supply)
A motherboard (2 sizes ATX- standard or mATX - small)
a processor and cooling fan
memory
Hard disk drive (pata or sata)
graphics card (onboard graphics aren't that hot)
DVD RW
floppy drive (you might need it to load sata drivers)

Choose your processor or motherboard first. I'd recommend an AMD AM2 processor and a motherboard that will fit this processor. The motherboard will say what kind of ram to fit - DDR II usually with AM2 boards. PCI-E graphics card. Your hard drive will be pata (easier to fit) or sata (need to load drivers first)
The processor comes with a fan but you may need case fans.
Whatever you decide make sure the motherboard, ram and processor all are suitable for one another.
Other stuff you can bung in is a tv card and a sound card and a dvd rom to copy dvds directly to your dvd-rw.
