Take a good look at the diamond. Chances are the gem is not as well, cut, with flaws, or carbon inclusions. Be sure to also ask to see the US Gemological Institute Registry, in which the actual stone appraisal is detailed.
It may also be that it's not a real diamond, but a manufactured diamond or a CZ. Ask good questions. Last thing you want is to buy something you think is valuable and have it turn out to be an overpriced piece of costume jewelry.

How many carats a diamond is is just one factor that affects price; cut, clarity, and how flawless a diamond is are a big factor. Design of the ring is another. A bigger diamond that upon close inspection shows a flaw costs less than a perfect smaller one; when the cut/lapidation of a diamond is one that is particularly hard to achieve without breaking the stone, that makes it more expensive as well. The workmanship involved in a particular type of setting also add to the price.

Are all other aspects of the ring the same as well? You've mentioned one c (carat), but you forgot the others; cut, clarity, and color. The one at the other jewelers may have fewer flaws and a clearer color. Some of the price difference may be because Macy's has lower overhead than the jewelry store.

I've found that the vast majority of the jewelry at Macy's is OVERpriced. If you're getting that good a deal on it, the diamonds probably aren't that great. They're most likely grayish, with some inclusions. If you take it, go to an appraiser and have it looked at. Return it if there are problems with it.

Because Macy's will buy from wholesalers at far better prices due to the volume they buy and the conditions they can ask due to the size of company they are

The quality of the diamond may be better, or the actual gold itself may be better. Ask for a certificate stating it's authenticity if you're unsure.

The clarity and color are different from diamond to diamond. To know an exact answer, you'd have to know the detail of the diamonds.

well, it's a department store so the costs may be lower. also, just because it looks the same doesn't mean the quality is the same.
