Movies contain very little historical fact or they embellish or use hyperbole to tell the story. Do NOT get your history from Hollywood for they screw it up for the purpose of telling a story or to put forth their own agenda, correct or not.

The opinion of colonists for or against independence of the colonies from England was not constant during the American Revolution differed at different times during the conflict, or differed by location, or by socioeconomic status. The rule of thumb was 1/3 for the independence movement, 1/3 loyalist, and the remaining 1/3 waiting to see how it would turn out. This is a complex question and needs research. The colonists wanted freedom. They rebelled! They threw the taxed tea into the water! They published books, and newspapers about the restrictions of their freedom! As shown in the Patriot, some men knew the cost of war, and the horrors of Battle, like Benjamin Martin. He was based on Francis Marion, 'The Swamp Fox'. He led the colonists through secret swamps and paths to give the British a war they never saw comming.

Looking at the strengths and weaknesses of the Americans versus the British, it is no question who would win or should have won. Historians all agree, the British

But they always forget to factor in one thing for the Americans.

No matter the size of the country, the advantages of an army, or the power of a king, there is not a man, or a kingdom, who could pierce the unbreakable dream of freedom.

Freedom.

While there was a loose connection to events of the revolution, the movie the Patriot was fiction and not history.
