Barack Obama announced his Official Presidential Campaign. He compared himself to America's favorite President (Abraham Lincoln).

Don't you find it interesting that a Democratic Candidate is a comparing himself to a Republican?

If All Republicans are evil, how will Obama comparing himself to a Republican be perceived in Democratic circles who claim to hate all Republicans?

Should he toe the party line and distance himself from Lincoln who was a Republican?

Clifton:

His grandmother still lives in Kenya. His lineage s African from Kenya. His father was Kenyan Professor.

So Lincoln didn't free his ancestors as far as we know.

Obama is a senator from Illinois. The Land of Lincoln is the state motto. He announced from Springfield where he and Lincoln served in the State Legislature. Lincoln's war freed the slaves. No oddities there.

However, I think he should distance himself from Lincoln. Lincoln was a typical repubican, greedy corporate lawyer who instead of using diplomacy, led us into a disastrous civil war using false reasons that killed over 600K Americans and destroyed half of our country so his cronies could become richer and more powerful. I think Bush is more like Lincoln and in the top tier of worst presidents of all time who have had revisionist marketing to make them into the heroes that they are not.

This question puts the problem of partisanship front-stage. Obama is only showing his intelligence of history by referring to Lincoln as the "Favorite"... this is a matter of opinion, not of party ideologies. For all the ramblings of both major parties, the lines between them have been blurred for about 40 years! Party lines hold no true value: only the personal values and records of our future president. This is why we have so many prospective candidates for this coming election. My hope has been restored in our Republic. What I do find ironic is that Obama can look upon his past and make a connection: That a person of Color can trace his lineage and freedoms back to such an important event in US Politics.

I'm a democrat. Since he didn't compare himself to Lincoln anyway, its not relevant. but.. even if he did, why would I be mad to have him like one of the greatest presidents of all time? I dont think they had huge democrat and republican fights like they do now. You're overthinking things..

Not all republicans or democrats or independents are bad - roping people in to this categories is silly. Some people in the same parties have very different ideas or philosophies. Party's also change over time, this red blue, left right crap really needs to stop or we are all screwed!

In the good ol' days, American politics wasn't so divided. Now it's just plain ridiculous how party-lined the voting is.
