Last night after taking my brother to eat seafood (blackend fish and crawfish ettouffee) his hands began to swell. Just his hands. So much so that he had to remove his watch. This morning he says they are a little numb and still swollen. Of course he refuses to go to the doctor but I'm wondering this>...He takes Glucosamine for his athritis in his knee. He is not allergic to seafood or shellfish but could too much shellfish cause swelling?
Has anyone experienced this before or have any intelligent input as to why this might happen after drinking one Corona and eating blackend fish?

He's definitely allergic to shellfish.....It's good his airway did'nt close up on him....that can happen. Bring him to doctor ASAP.

People change as they age...(no matter the age) where he was'nt allergic, he very well is now.....Happens in alot of patients

Note:
Anxiety attacks can cause swelling. (usually w/narrowing of esophagus)......keep in mind, you don't have to get excited to have an attack....(usually supressed emotions)

Edit:
If numbness persists, make an appointment with a neurologist.

Sounds like a possible allergic reaction to something he ingested. If it is an allergy have him take some Benadryl to slow down the process. If it isn't an emergency have him set up an doctors appointment to get an allergy test. There is a common misconception about allergic reactions. Some people are more prone to allergic reactions but allergies can surface at any time. If the allergic reaction is serious enough his airway could close up which will result in death.

It can also be hypertension, water retention, poor circulation and a myriad of other problems. Was the dish pretty salty??? Because some people also retain more water than others. The numbness would enough reason for me to go get the problem checked out.

Sorry to hear about his swelling. My boyfriend has been experiancing this for about 4 years now. the fist time this happend it was just his hands and it happened after we ate at a fish restaurant. At first we thought it may be that the pan or the oil that they used may have been used for seafood, even though he has never been allergic to seafood. Since then he has had this swelling happen spontaniously (even no fish invloved). He has been to several hospitals, and it now happens in his hands, feet, genital area and face. His airways started to get affected by the swelling in his face and neck. No one could find a solution in his case even after several visits to the ER.
He should get it checked out, if it is the seafood he will need a epi pen. and they will give him an allergie pill and a perscription for a cortosteriod (i think) and that will take the swelling down and the allergie pill will clear up the allergie to whatever it is that he allergic to. If you notice this only happens after seafood, even if he has never had an allegy to it before, keep in mind your body changes and he could have developed and allergy to even something that never bothered him in the past. that is what the doctors told my boyfriend, allergies can start at anytime. good luck, i also have to add, one of the first things the doctor tested him for was arthritis, which he didnt have. and by the way, my boyfriend also reported numbness every single time it happens, and itching.

Yes, too much shellfish products may cause swelling even if he doesn't usually exhibit allergic reaction to shellfish. Also, if the fish is not fresh that will also cause an aversive reaction. If the swelling doesn't go down or if it gets worse (e.g., if his skin starts to turn purple or black and if he starts to feel pain in his hands), you need to take him to the ER immedeately because it means that his blood circulation is impaired and it may lead to necrosis. Has he tried taking anti-histamine or other medications to reduce the swelling?

Must be the shellfish! I experienced swelling and itching of the hands and feet then projectile vomiting after taking glucosamine and a fish oil capsule. I have been taking this combination for over a year but this sudden reaction really knocked me out. Please seek medical attention ASAP; I agree with being lucky about throat not closing up.

hi, kristilkl
most likely is the seafood and the beer are causing this. he probably had a allergic reaction. in my clinic we would provide herbal remedies to clear the toxicity in the blood. that will bring the swelling down.

Just because he has never been allergic to fish before does not mean he is not having an allergic reaction to it now. He should seek some medical advice.
