They are once again trying to get people to accept wide usage of a dollar coin instead of the dollar bill. This time around, the dollar coin will be gold in color.

I, personally, do not like the idea of a dollar coin, because I prefer to fold my dollars instead of having them jingle around in my pocket. I'm a relatively broke college student, so I still frequently carry single dollar bills and would not want to have to deal with them as coins.

Also, I carry my cellphone in the same pocket as my money, so I wouldn't want the coins to scratch up my phone (keys in the other pocket). I usually put my small change in my back pockets, and anything under a dollar is no big deal if I happen to lose.

What are your thoughts??

The interesting thing about this is we seem to have this affinity for tradition even when it becomes impractical. For example, look at the United Kingdom -- the pound is worth more than the dollar, and the smallest banknote in the UK is the 5 pound note. When I was over there a few years back, it was kind of neat to pay for a dinner entirely in change (I think it was 7 or 8 pounds with the tip).

The other thing is that on average, a dollar bill remains in circulation for 18 months while a coin will circulate for 30 years or more. Granted, coins cost more to make, but you might be able to melt down coins taken out of circulation, remake them into planchets and make new coins with them.

As far as the whole cellphone and keys issue, there's a simple answer -- put the keys in the same pocket as your change. Since the change will move in and out of your pocket, you probably will have no personal sadness if your change gets dinged up a bit.

One way to help distinguish the dollar coin from a quarter would be to go with a bimetallic coin similar to what they do in the United Kingdom and Canada.

Frankly, I don't see us going to a dollar coin being used exclusively anytime soon, but its not a bad idea.

Because coins are more durable and last longer than paper money, I think the 100's of millions of dollars 'wasted' every year on printing the $1 bill could go toward other more useful things... like health care.

I think people will never switch from the bill to the coin if there's both options because we're creatures of habit. I think the $1 bill should stop being printed to ensure the longevity of the $1 coin. I'd like to see the $2 and $5 become coins too, but that's another question for another day. Sure, strippers will get either annoyed or a raise, but who else would really get affected by it?

When people were polled about adding the dollar coin again, there was a general idea of "why bother" about it, but when polled about dropping the penny (because it's now worth more melted down than, well, a penny!) the same people were like, "We need coins! We need the penny so things don't get rounded and cause inflation!"

Let's think about the good of the general population here, put aside our petty excuses and differences, and re-direct this money we're throwing out on printing the most expensive bill we've got! (It costs the same to print a $1 bill as a $10,000 bill.)

Oh, and coins are designed for blind people to not accidentally use the wrong denomination, so I'm not worried about accidentally using a larger gold-colored, flat-edged coin for a larger silver-colored, scored-edged coin.

Bad idea, most of us save our change untill we're flat broke and a dollar bill could mean the differenced in a 6 pack or 12 pack.
