How does the collision theory relate to the rate of a chemical reaction?

Collision theory is a theory that qualitatively explains how chemical reactions occur and why reaction rates differ for different reactions. It assumes that for a reaction to occur the reactant particles must collide, but only a certain fraction of the total collisions, the effective collisions, cause the transformation of reactant molecules into products. This is due to the fact that only a fraction of the molecules have sufficient energy and the right orientation at the moment of impact to break the existing bonds and form new bonds. The minimal amount of energy needed so that the molecule is transformed is called activation energy. Collision theory is closely related to chemical kinetics.

Collision theory states that two molecules must collides with enough energy to react with one another in order for a reaction to take place. This can be calculated and is called collision frequency and is effected by factors such as pressure and temperature and concentraction of the reaction mixture.

Molecules or atoms that react must 'Collide' with each other with enough energy(usually heat) to overcome repulsion, and with proper orientation to react.
Reaction rate is related to the number of molecules that can react (concentration) x the fraction that have sufficient energy X the fraction that have proper orientation to react. This is not an exact function but is close to the relationship. You may have to look in your text for the exact relationship.

There is a mathematical relationship involving the energy of activation and probability factors to relate a reaction rate with temperature. It is something like this R =Px Zx e^(-Eact/RT)Where P is the probability that the molecule have the proper orientation to react and Z is the concentration of molecules.

collisions must take place for a reaction to happen. there must be enough energy and they miust be correctly arranged for the reaction to happen. the more collisions the faster the reaction.
