Question

How often do u have to trim your horses feet if their unshoed? and is there any daily care that goes into keeping ur horse unshoed? thanks! =)

All 3 of my horses are unshod and they get trimmed about every 6-8 weeks. Some things to do to keep their hooves in good shape is keeping them cleaned out, keeping thrush out, if they are dry putting pine tar on them, thats about it. If you do decide to put a conditioner on the hooves use plain pine tar. It is cheaper then hoof conditioner and it is a much better thing to use. Our farrier reccommends it highly. it is also much cheaper.

Typically every 6-8 weeks to keep them healthy and in good condition. I have never heard of anyone ever trimming their horses feet only twice a year so I am quite unsure about that one. If you horseshow like me, you are going to want them done 6-8 weeks though so they don't start cracking. Also a farrier can let you know if there is anything to be concerned about with your horses hooves such as thrush or abscesses so it is a good check-up as well.

Yes it depends mainly on the horse. Generally 6 - 8 weeks in summer 8 - 10 in winter. Some grow faster and get done more often some slowly and on good ground get done less. Pine tar doesn't really add moisture but it keeps them from drying out any more. If they get extremely dry (cracking and flaky) in the summer soak them in clean water about twenty minutes then apply the pine tar. No other care other than occasionally picking them clean.

Every 4-6 weeks just like if they are shod. There isn't any special care to an unshod horse. You still have to pick out there feet and check for injuries. Just don't pick out the frog, the triangle of flesh in the middle of the hoof.

It all depends on where you live and how much exercise your horse gets. If they are turned out a lot then you don't have to trim them very much. Mine are always out in the pasture and I trim them about twice a year. If they are in close quarters then you would have to trim them more often since they aren't wearing their hooves down. I also don't have any rocks where I live so I don't have to do much with them for that reason. :)

it really depends on how fast the hooves are growing. Rule of thumb is 6-8 weeks inbetween triming. Routine care would be to pick the hooves, medicating the sole and frog if there is white line or thrush problems and putting oil on them in the summer if they are dry or brittle.

In the hot summer I also keep a patch of mud around their water trough to aid in adding moisture in the hooves.
