dead bettas often get this. I think it's fungus, but it also might be the fish decomposing since it happens to basically every betta if not removed immediately.

sorry about the little guy.

For one, you really shouldn't get a young child a fish as a pet because they always want to put their filthy, grungy hands in the water and that alone with make a fish sick not only from the stress of the hand being in there but from the hands not being clean. Now as for the hairy fuzz, it kind of sounds like Columnaris which is a deadly bacterial disease but it could also have been a fungus infection like others have pointed out. This can happen when the fish is put into water that s/he was not acclimated to. Not only that but bettas are tropical fish so a large bowl isn't good housing for them since you can't put an appropriate size heater in there. I recommend that you get a bigger tank(2.5 gallons as the absolute minimum) so you can get a heater and they also like plants(live is best) and a cave so they can hide in. Another thing to take into consideration is where you place the betta. If he is in a high traffic area(where there is a lot of activity going on all of the time), then this could stress him out since he's not use to the new surroundings. It's also not good to put them near TV's or stereos either because the sound waves would be a lot louder in the water then they are in the air.

bettas are more susceptable to fungus (looks like cotton or wool) because they are usually kept in small bowls without adequate filtration. at the first sign of fuzziness, treatment with maracyn will help, and adding a drop or 2 of melafix to the bowl may help prevent fungal attacks...good luck with the next one, i hope you dont give up

Sounds like cotton fungus to me. Make sure you completely sanatize the bowl before getting another fish and if you used tap water in the last one, don't use it again because the cotton fungus could be in your water.

It's just bacteria combing over his skin and beginning to eat him. Perfectly natural part of decay.
