How long has "bumping", where you simply "bump" a lock to open it, been around. How prevelent?

I heard about this yesterday and it is alarming how easy it is.

It has been around for at least a half century. However many of the better locks are arranged internally so that it can't be done (by such techniques as having more than one retaining pin going into the shackle).
