It laid the ground rules for how the government was to treat citizens (free speech, bearing arms, expose factos etc...).

The actual execution of the constitution has in many cases NOT met the criteria of how it was written.

The constitution gave us the form of laws, and a structure of government, that has allowed us to become and remain the best , and strongest nation in the world.Without our constitution the socialist and communist would have over run our model nation long ago. They find it much harder with it , but still try constantly. If there is one weakness I have seen it is in the supreme court,Judges are appointed for life and if the ,liberal /socialist, have enough judges appointed they would not have to change the constitution they would be able to interpret it the way they want .This is dangerous.

Well, basically (and this is putting it in laymens terms) it provided a safegaurd for the people so that the government couldn't take advantage of the people.

It also provided for the structure of our government today and set the balance of power for the government. In other words it set up the judicial, executive and legistative branches and specified what they could and couldn't do.

Wow there's so much to say. Honestly sweetheart to get the full effect you're going to have to read the constitution yourself and read a few history books to compare and contrast etc...
