A harpsichord is like a piano, however on a piano the hammer strikes the strings to make the sound. With a Harpsichord, it plucks the strings.

Harpsichords were the precursor to pianos.
However, while pianos have hammers which hit the strings the harpsichord strings are plucked. The piano was therefore an advance on the harpsichord as it meant that the player could make the sound louder or softer depending on how hard he hit the keys. Hence the name pianoforte.
Due to the fact that harpsichord strings are plucked it has a more metallic sound to it. The famous 20th century conductor Thomas Beecham once aptly described the harpsichord sound as being like 'two skeletons copulating on a tin roof'. However, this description, though being rather funny, is not entirely fair as there are some beautiful sounding harpsichords in existence.

A string instrument looking like a small grand piano almost.... but, unlike a piano where the strings are struck by a hammer when you push a key, they are plucked on a harpsichord when a key is pushed.
