I know someone that has MS and needs money how can I legally raise money for them to get money for them?

A guy I know has MS and a bunch of his friends recently raised money for him so that he could get a computer to help him communicate. They teamed up with a local bar and some local musicians and held a benefit show for him. Some people also donated items that were to be auctioned off during the show. They raised several thousand dollars doing this and all the money went to him.
