Leather will last you longer than any fabric covered furniture. You will want to get a finshed pigmented leather (see leather types here) > http://www.mobileleatherservice.com/LeatherTypes.html
Make sure what you pic is fully finished and good quality. There is a lot of low end leather furniture on the market. The old phrase "you get what you pay for" is really true when it comes to leather.. bottom line is if the deal is to good to be true it is because the quality is usually sub par...
have a decent cleaner on hand and treatment applied directly after purchase see > http://www.mobileleatherservice.com/NOBULL.html
Good luck

Leather is great because it is easy to clean, and you do not get ground in marks that fabric furniture tends to get on it over time with sticky little fingers. So i guess it certainly will look better and last longer than fabric furniture because it wears well too.
The cons on the other hand are, that you do have to condition your leather lounge so it does not crack and it tends to be cold to sit on. I cover mine with throw rugs.

I would say that it is a good choice with children because you can just wipe it off. On the other hand, if they use a sharp object and cut it, it will be a permanent mark. Buy it in a rich dark color so that scuffs, etc won't be a problem.

I have leather because of my kids also. Love it! You can put a wet rag to it if need be..Lasts longer...I always throw a blanket on it if I want to lay down..It tends to always feel cold.....
