The night before exfoliate your body and face especially on the elbows and knees.
Dont wear make up, moisturiser or deodorant on the day that you go to get it done.
I usually use california sunless tan - this is the machine one so you dont even have to get your clothes off in front of anyone. It gives you a really good natural looking tan because it works with your natural pigment, so doesnt look orange at all.

I cannot offer help on the first part of your question (since I use self tanners at home with great success) but the second part:
>Exfoliate/ shave
> leave no residue on your skin
Try to get as much dead skin off before hand. If you don't, your spray tan will not last as long. With winter here, this is even more important.
don't add baby oil or moisturizer on your skin for the same reasons. You want clean skin before you go in.
Sidenote: I saw a news article that says that YES breathing those vapors is bad no matter what they say, and ask for protective gear.

i use ecotan which is a classic self tan spray. originally i used to use sunbeds a lot and i would top up my colour with ecotan. but when i became pregnant i still wanted to feel glowing on the outside as well as the inside!! I continued to spray when i was going anywhere special, usually the night before as it takes 4-6 hours to materialise. Have a bath or shower 1st using a body puff then afterwards moisturise all over your body which helps the spray be distributed evenly. I buy online, just type in "ecotan" and find the best price!

Well everyone else has got skin preparation down pat, but some good home sunless tanning is:
Fake Bake
St. Tropez
and Victorias secret spray tan & bronzer
--and they're alot cheaper than going to get sprayed at a salon. Plus everytime Ive gone to a salon the tan has been either streaky or it came off on my clothes.

Exfoliate as best as you can beforehand make sure to shave, and use moisturizer on your hands, around your ankles, on your knees, and elbows, and anywhere on your body that wouldn't normally tan. Then for a few bucks, go to your local tanning salon and get a Euro-tan. Its a walk in tanner and you stand with your arms and legs out while it sprays you. Then you turn around with the same stance and get sprayed again. It works really well and lasts for a while. I use this kind of spray tan for bikini competitions. Just make sure to wear baggy clothing when you go in and avoid putting on socks right away. The tight parts of the clothes can rub off some of the tan. Good luck!

i have used many but none compare to st tropez!! best to go to salon if you can afford it they go through the pros and cons also! if that's too pricey they do an 'aero bronze' formula you can get in boots or super drug or house of Fraser concessions. which i think is fab, best to use night before you need it. Giving enough time to develop, try not to bath until the morning after you have applied it. Wipe off any products like deodorant and make up, shave and exfoliate before you start application.
