Writing as described by 'I' is first person - "I went downstairs to find out what all the noise was, only to discover an alien standing by the refrigerator eating processed cheese. I told it to shut the fridge door; my feet were getting cold." First person narration allows a very close and direct window on the action, but is limited in that the reader can only know what the narrator knows.

Using he/she is third person - "Marzipan went downstairs to find out what all the noise was, only to discover an alien standing by the refrigerator eating processed cheese. She told it to shut the fridge door; her feet were getting cold." Third person narration can utilise the close-up potential of first person narration, allowing insight into the thoughts and feelings of one or more characters; alternatively it can be more remote.

There is such a thing as second person narration, where 'you' do various things, but it's frankly a bit weird - "You went downstairs to find out what all the noise was, only to discover an alien standing by the refrigerator eating processed cheese. You told it to shut the fridge door; your feet were getting cold." Second person narration is pretty much only used in 'choose your own adventure' books.

Hope this helps!
