I tried the 'format C:', but it gives me a message saying that the drive is currently in use by another process.
I close all processes except for explorer and systray, and it gives me the same message....NOW what do I do?

1. first you need save your files specially the important one to another hard drive/partition or any removable device. just for precoutionary measures.
2. if you have a original cd and there is no scratches on it then there is no problem in reinstalling it. just for you to be safe try to boot the cd first, make sure the booting sequence or priority is your cdrom first before your hard drive.
3. make sure you have all the drivers for all you pc components(video card, sound card etc.)

If you want to reformat your hard drive -- that will erase everything including the operating system . from a bare hard drive you can then reload windows 98 using the cd because it is a bootable cd. You have to have the product key code to do this and it is on the envelope that 98 came in. If you have everything go to the DOS prompt and type format C: and it will erase your hard drive. Again -- you need the key code to do this.

When you installing windows, first you must boot computer in ANY operating system, in order to start windows setup programs. Modern windows comes on bootable CD, so it can boot from cd you want to install, but Win98 is not bootable (unless somebody makes it). So, you need to create Start-Up disk. This will require one floppy disk. Go into Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs>Startup Disk> Create startup disk. When you create it, you must set you computer to boot from floppy first. Restart your computer, and enter BIOS (usually this is done by pressing Del when starting). In bios you must find option with name Boot sequence, or something like that. There you set First Boot Device: Floppy, Second:Hard Disk... other is irrelevant.
Now prepare all drivers (for graphics, sound, printer, monitor...) and you are ready to go!
After you setted floppy as first bootable device, insert Start-Up disk you created and restart computer. You will get question to boot With or Without CD-Rom supprort. (offcourse, you will choose WITH CD-ROM), whait a while and you will get C:\ prompt. Then you can format C: after formating is done, insert Windows98 CDROM in drive. In C:\ prompt type D: or E: (you will se what letter uses your CD-rom, it will be written on screen after you boot with cd-rom. For now let's say that E: is cd-rom. First you need to know in witch folder is windows installation. Usually is on root (just e:\) or in folder Win98 or Windows or Windows98, you will find it. Go into that folder and type setup. Windows setup will start, than all you need to do is answer the questions about time zone, type windows key...
That's about it.

1. backup all your files onto a CD (if you need to)
2. insert the CD into the cd drive and restart your computer
3. the system should now boot from the CD or you may need to set your BIOS to boot from it.
4. follow the windows98 installation wizard
