Contact your local Dept of Agriculture or Forestry if you have one.
Here where I live they will actually do all the work for you, and pay you the royalties for the use and the timber they grow on your Land.
Look into it, you don't necessarily have to have any experience or know how yourself.
Good luck with it all, hope your inheritance works out well for you.

I don't know what you can do with but I live in a logging area and do know that five acres is no where near enough to sustain a viable logging venture. If you were to plant trees now you would never see them being cut as it takes so long for them to mature. Even Christmas trees can take up to twelve years before they are mature enough for sale. On thinking about it, depending on where the land is, I would probably build a cabin and keep as much of the land that I could comfortably look after for agriculture
eg. corn, vegetables and fruit, both trees and bushes. The rest I would rent out for grazing and pasture, this would mean minimal upkeep and expenditure as well as income to keep your private, personal part going.

You don't say where you are, but on 5 acres you could:
Raise trees either for logging, fruit, nuts or to sell them
Build a parking lot
Build a go cart track
Plant vegetables for the public to pick for a fee
Raise animals for sale
Build a chip and put golf course for personal use or profit
Build a monster house with great land scaping and a hell of a back yard
Lease it for grazing
Build a corn maze for people to get lost in
Start a manufacturing plant (my choice - a low sodium jerky plant)
Build a commercial office building
Build rental property
Build commercial storage facility (can be quite profitable, will pay for a $100k building in about 1 year trick is to keep putting them up as they fill up)
Point is: the sky is the limit (the real limit of course is the zoning rules in the area and how much BS you are willing to put up with)

It would help to know where the land is. But, as the other posters pointed out, 5 acres really isn't enough to do any kind of logging. When you say "open country" do you mean that the land is a field or is surrounded by fields? This might also help make recommendations.
Of course, you could always just sell it or hold on to it and do nothing.

Use it as a getaway for camping or hiking.Growing trees for
the purpose of logging would takes years to get good quality logs.
And you probably would not be around to see any of the profit.
If the property do have some trees already.I would remove the injured
or damage ones to give room for the good ones to grow.
If you want to plant trees start an orchard of some fruit trees maybe.
Layout a garden plot or build you a vacation house or cabin and enjoy what
your relative gave to you.

we've about an same acreage. :) What I did became to create some island(hills) the position the "backyard" became low. i purchased quite an collection of seeds, and began planting attempt gardens. i needed to make sure what may be the least intensive element i ought to plant - for climatic situations and for pest resistance. I shop some horses, and that i take advantage of their manure. some flora were obviously doing extra effective than others, via season/climatic situations and susceptibility to insects. seems that the least intensive element right that's watermelon - the tomatoes and eggplant and okra are all searching tremendous, yet choose a touch extra water. For some reason the yellow squash is quite buggy and that i imagine it may do extra effective in soil that had extra organic and organic or clay cloth - flow make sure. you may attempt going to a marketplace . See which of the belongings you planted that are doing nicely have a higher value ticket than different flora you've that are also doing nicely. Yellow squash is affordable(right here), as is zucchini and corn(inspite of the actual shown actuality that it should be efficient to plant some corn for extremely own use, because the more recent picked is soooo a lot extra effective than the shop-offered starchy stuff...). once you've a water facility i'd genuinely evaluate aquaculture...!

Well, it takes quite a while for trees to grow big enough to be useful for logging. If you're looking for something in that line, how 'bout a Christmas tree farm? I would bet those wouldn't take quite as long to grow. Or you can lease land to farmers. I would suggest talking to your county extension agent. Find county phone numbers in your local phone book. Extension agents are a great resource for all kinds of nature information, from how to test your soil, to what kinds of animals live in your area, how to compost, etc. They probably even have a website.

5 acres is not a lot of land for trees for logging, and will take about 15 years for the first cutting.christmas trees are a good idea but it has to be trimed twice a year,a lot of work.fruit trees are another good idea.if you want to go with trees contac your state forest service ,they can give you a lot of info. and are free.look in the phone book.good luck in whatever you decide.

Trees take a long time to grow, I wouldn't bother with it. If I were you, I would see if one of the neighbors would like to rent it. That way, you would have income from the land to cover taxes and insurance on it.
