I am staying with a friend, who is currently in critical care, due to a head on collision, he was on a motorcycle. We were threatened before the accident, to be evicted, because I am there, and have been for about three months. Is there any law or whatever, that might prevent the landlord from kicking us out, because I am taking care of his animals, and belongings, until there is some improvement in his condition. He is unconcious, and in very bad shape, at 73 years of age. What can I do?

that is entirely up to a judge. If your friend owed money before the accident, even an attorney would have problems keeping him from being evicted. It is a "private sector" and they can evict if you were living there and not supposed to be as well. I know some judges will not evict a person in cold weather months, they will tell the landlord to give the tenants 2-3 months to get out. The person is still responsible for all rent due though. I am very sorry for your situation, but I suggest going to see an attorney.

Many larger cities also have tenant associations that provide advice and advocacy, as well as representatives of the police department that specialize in senior citizen issues. There probably isn't a lot you and your lawyer can do since you are in violation of the lease by being there, and your friend is in violation by being behind in the rent, but it is good to try to find advocates out there to help you through this.

Thank you for being a wonderful care-giver.
Do a search online for "tenant's rights" by your residence's State.
You can also go to http://nolo.com and look up tenants' rights.
Or...
Talk with a realtor in your neighborhood or as a last resort, contact a lawyer for a free consultation.
Bless both of you!
Hope you quickly find a solution.
